Art Dubai 2024

ArtDubai2024
ArtDubai2024

Clinique La Prairie believes in the promotion of wellbeing through all its forms, including through the arts. As such, we were proud to return for our second consecutive edition of Art Dubai on 01st March 2024, for a unique fusion of art and wellbeing.

Art Dubai is the Middle East’s leading international art fair, taking place every March in Dubai, UAE. Over the past 17 years, Art Dubai has cemented its role in being a major catalyst in the local, regional and international conversations on art from the Middle East and surrounding region (MENASA – Middle East, North Africa & South Asia), and putting art from these territories onto the global map.

ArtDubaiLongevityLounge

This year, we are thrilled to collaborate with the renowned multidisciplinary artist Sara Naim, a Syrian multidisciplinary artist who grew up between Dubai and London, to create a piece that speaks to the ethos of Clinique La Prairie. The large-scale sculpture is organically shaped and made up of depictions of sunrises and sunsets.

“I associate wellness with wholeness and longevity with timelessness. The source that binds the two for me is the sun, as a symbolic notion to cyclicality due its constant motion of sunrise and sunset.” - Sara Naim

Art Dubai Fair

A haven for respite and artistic reflection, the immersive Lounge experience is made up of three sections: a Detox Bar, including healthy snacks and drinks; Holistic Health, where nutritionists give advice for a longevity-driven lifestyle; and the Luxury Experience Room, where therapists offer an exclusive menu of treatments for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Measure and tackle stress overload more effectively

Epigenetic Stress Test
Epigenetic Stress Test

We are proud to announce the launch of a pioneering brand-new epigenetic test designed to measure stress overload more effectively. This test is available “à la carte” as an add-on for guests doing one of Clinique La Prairie’s longevity programmes.

A personalised and precise epigenetic measure of your stress overload – exclusively at Clinique La Prairie

Stress overload is typically estimated using several biomarkers that measure the functioning of the body’s main systems – immune, cardiovascular, metabolic and neuroendocrine.

This is where Clinique La Prairie’s new epigenetic test comes in. Developed by Genknowme – an innovative life sciences company specialising in epigenetics – this new test, also called “Epigenetic signature for stress overload”, offers aneffective method of measuring stress overload. It standardises the measurement of allostatic load and provides a personalised and precise  stress profile in just 4 days.

Stress Test

The stress overload signature is based on biomarkers for the following systems: immune, cardiovascular, metabolic and neuroendocrine (mood and stress). Concretely, the test provides an overall stress impact score with specific bespoke insights on each of these four systems, revealing the individual impact of each system on a person’s stress overload and precise recommendations to improve them.. Armed with this knowledge, Clinique La Prairie medical expert will guide the guest on strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of stress, ensuring a proactive approach to wellbeing.

When a bit of stress becomes too much stress

Stress is the body’s normal reaction to a challenging situation, making us more alert and ready to tackle the event that triggered it – whether it be physical or emotional. Think of it as an alarm system going off to let your body know it is “under threat” and needs to mobilise its internal resources.

While stress does serve a purpose in certain situations, too much stress can be truly detrimental to our health and wellbeing. The accumulation of stress responses is referred to as “allostatic load” or, more commonly, as “stress overload”. When too frequent or prolonged for extended periods of time, the physiological dysregulation – the opposite of homeostasis – we experience when under stress can contribute to a variety of health complications. Put simply, the accumulated ‘wear and tear’ in the body caused by stress can progressively drive the body’s internal systems to their limits and precipitate various health issues, including cardiovascular disease, premature ageing, weight gain, depression and even diabetes.

But how does one know when a bit of stress has turned into too much stress? Getting an accurate measure of one’s stress overload can provide invaluable information on the state of the body and help guide stress management strategies, targeted lifestyle changes and personalised medical recommendations.

Recommendations for stress management from Clinique La Prairie’s experts

While it is important to identify and address the root causes of stress for long-term health and wellbeing, knowing how to manage stress levels daily can be very helpful in the short run.

Although this might seem obvious, it is worth reminding that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential for anyone trying to manage their stress levels. As confirmed by a holistic therapist at Clinique La Prairie, this involves a balanced diet, staying hydrated, exercising, restful sleep and spending time in nature regularly.

Perhaps less well known is the power of visualisation and positive affirmations. Visualising and verbalising the great day that lies ahead can really help shift your attitude, helping you to embrace the reality of life with a more serene state of mind.

One of the simplest ways to address the body’s natural stress response is to use conscious breathing, also known as controlled breathing. As Clinique La Prairie’s breathing coach and Pranayama expert Phil Simha explains, “conscious breathing slows our heart and breathing rates, lowers blood pressure and clears the mind”. For those who wish to tap into this superpower, becoming familiar with abdominal breathing – the most relaxed way of breathing – is the first step. Inhaling deep into your stomach creates a balance between perfect oxygen supply and low pulse – a state of deep relaxation. The following practice is a great way to get started:

  1. Lay on a mat carefully unfolding the spine (with support under the knees in case of lumbar pain).
  2. Place a light weight (500 grams max) on your belly to help focus attention specifically on that area.
  3. Breathe (in the belly) consciously but with no effort: inhale slowly against the resistance of the weight, and then let the exhalation happen slowly while the weight presses down on the abdominal wall (the inhalation should be very slow and the exhalation 1,5 to 2 times longer than the inhalation).
  4. Inhaling through your nose, you feel the cool air entering and can imagine it spreading through your body. The same way the cool air entered, the same way the warm breath leaves the body.
  5. Visualise how regenerating oxygen enters the body with the inhale, while toxins exit the body and mind through the exhale.
  6.  After 8-10 minutes, bring life back to feet and hands, then stretch with a deep inhale.
  7. Roll onto your right flank with legs bent, stay there for 1-2 minutes breathing in the belly, then open your eyes and slowly come back to a seated position.

Maintaining a healthy brain across your lifespan

Cognitive Function
Cognitive Function

Throughout our lives, the human body and brain experience the effects of many external and internal factors that determine our health as we get older. These factors can lead to a wide range of outcomes in old age, from becoming progressively frail and losing independence to maintaining physical, cognitive, and social abilities.

Understanding why people age differently can help us develop ways to keep our bodies and brains healthy as we age. Our experts recently contributed to a new medical review exploring factors that influence brain health over a lifetime.

Understanding your brain health

The American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association describe brain health as the ability to function well in various aspects like thinking, moving, and feeling.

This applies to people of all ages, but when we talk about brain health in the context of aging, there are many terms and concepts like the "brain aging gap," "brain reserve," and "successful aging" that are used to describe different aspects of brain health. These terms cover various processes related to brain health as people get older.

From a simple perspective, the term "brain age gap" refers to how the brain can look or function older than expected for a person's actual age. This idea suggests that as we grow older, our brains may experience structural changes, but they can also maintain their function and even grow in certain ways.

When we talk about successful aging, we mean a path where individuals remain healthy in both body and mind while staying socially active. This involves maintaining the brain's structure and function as we age. So, it's about having a healthy brain without obvious disease signs.

Brain Health

Resilience, on the other hand, is the ability to deal with brain-related issues as we age. Even if someone doesn't feel or show signs of cognitive problems, their brain might still have signs of aging or degeneration. For example, someone may have brain changes associated with diseases like Alzheimer's but can still function normally.

Brain reserve is a concept that relates to how the brain adapts to the harmful effects of different health problems. Cognitive reserve is more about the brain's ability to stay mentally sharp even when facing aging or health challenges. In the study of brain health, it's crucial to understand both how the brain resists problems and how it copes with them.

What can affect your brain health

Across lifetime, the brain undergoes substantial changes at various levels of observation spanning between molecular, cellular, network and systems levels.

The review found five main concerns that impact negatively on brain health: unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical activity, sleep issues, heart-related problems, and chronic inflammation. Left unchecked, these concerns can gradually add up and harm brain health.

When we talk about successful aging, we mean a path where individuals remain healthy in both body and mind while staying socially active. This involves maintaining the brain's structure and function as we age. So, it's about having a healthy brain without obvious disease signs.

Personalised solutions for optimal brain health

However, if we intervene early and effectively, we can promote healthy brain aging. In the review, we helped identify a framework to test personalised strategies promoting brain health and preventing cognitive decline in old age.

Our approach begins by identifying factors that can be changed throughout a person's life - we call them LiMEE factors:

  1. Healthy nutrition
  2. Cardio-vascular health
  3. Anti-inflammatory state
  4. Physical activity
  5. Sleep hygiene

These factors are at the core of our concept because they can be treated or adjusted. We then lay out some assumptions about how these LiMEE factors affect brain health.

After that, we delve into the biological processes that explain how these factors relate to brain health as we get older.

By understanding and addressing these factors, we can develop personalized approaches to maintaining brain health as we live longer.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BLOOD SUGAR AND WEIGHT LOSS

Glucose Monitoring
Glucose Monitoring

Glucose Monitoring now added into the Healthy Weight Programme

Clinique La Prairie has integrated the continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) device into the Healthy Weight programme. A CGM tracks the blood sugar levels in real-time, and spots hyperglycaemia (blood sugar above standard range) and hypoglycaemia (blood sugar below standard range).

The benefit of it is that CGM enables to know which foods tend to make your glucose levels spike is. It is known that higher glycaemic food triggers more insulin, resulting in more calories stored as fat; while lower glycemic food trigger less insulin, resulting more calories used for energy. By understanding where you are and what foods and habits are keeping your glucose levels stable, you can improve your metabolic health and, ultimately, have a better control on your weight.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

It consists of a sensor simply and discreetly applied onto the arm’s skin and connected to an app. As carbohydrates are digested, glucose enters the bloodstream before being absorbed into the interstitial fluid (a thin layer of fluid that surrounds the tissue cells below the skin). The device allows the quantification of daily glucose fluctuations and shows an instant visualization of glucose responses. Measuring glucose is used as part of the overall bespoke strategy to lose and control weight by giving you concrete numbers on your metabolic health. When you discover what is driving high glucose variability, you can make informed diet and lifestyle changes to improve metabolic health, which will make it easier to control weight.

The sensor has been designed to track glucose levels for up to 14 days (which perfectly fits with the 14-day length of the Healthy Weight programme). Over the 2 weeks of the stay, Clinique La Prairie’s nutritionist will be regularly checking in the results with the guest and use the science-driven information to design efficient nutritional strategies for him/her.

glucose monitoring

A PERSONALIZED STRATEGY TO OPTIMIZE THE RESULTS

Because not everyone is the same when it comes to weight gain, the Healthy Weight program offers an individualized approach. There are indeed particular sensitivities; typically, the basal metabolic rate which can vary greatly from person to person. However, these factors can be influenced with targeted treatment and care.

A HOLISTIC VIEW TO IDENTIFY AND ADDRESS THE CAUSES OF THE PROBLEM

This multidisciplinary approach makes it possible to treat the underlying and sometimes indirect causes of overweight. For example, it is not uncommon to find subacute systemic inflammation, disruption of the microbiota or desynchronization of the biological clock, with irregular and/or insufficient sleep. Sometimes it will be a question of combating oxidative stress by treating excess cortisol.

BEING OVERWEIGHT IS THEREFORE A PROBLEM THAT SHOULD NOT BE TACKLED WITHOUT PROFESSIONAL HELP.

People often want to lose a lot of weight quickly. However, a number of studies have proved that draconian diets induce biological compensation mechanisms, resulting in weight regain after only one year and a risk of the yo-yo effect. The failure rate of diets without appropriate professional support varies between 60% and 90%. In addition, rapid weight loss leads to muscle wasting; this loss of lean mass can represent up to 30% of the lost weight.
